Real Talk

a terrific question came up in Wayne’s periscope chat last night.Someone asked about the loss by the President’s 3 picks. The picks were Ed Gillespie in Virginia, Luther Strange and Roy Moore in Alabama. The concern seemed to be that Pres Trump had lost his mojo.(Basically the viewer wanted to know why these were losses for Trump.)

First of all, let’s point out that there have been a number of wins. They vastly outnumber the losses. That said,we can’t ignore the 2 races that went to the dogs either. I’m sure some folks are worried it might portend what’s going to happen in the 2018 mid terms.

We’ll start with Gillespie in Virginia. The loss there should not be a shock.Virginia is a blue as blue gets state. It’s solidly Democrat. Hillary carried Virginia. Ed is a decent guy but he’s also a Bush protege. He’s establishment Republican. Always has been. However,it was a tough state to win no matter what Republican they put up there.

Now the Alabama Special Election for Jeff Sessions seat was a whole other animal. What a mess that turned out to be.

So many things went haywire you could pick any one to begin with and illustrate the problem.

The Republican primary had 3 candidates.

The 3 were Luther Strange(who was currently in that seat),Roy Moore and Mo Brooks.

 Mo,Moore and Strange.
Trump backed Luther Strange. Strange seemed to be a decent guy who had supported the Presidents agenda.

Mitch McConnell jumped in there and got behind Strange. I think the President not only thought Strange was a good candidate for the general(and could win), but i also wonder if he didn’t back him to give a bone to McConnell. There were impending votes coming up for his agenda. He may have wanted Mitch in his corner.

Many prominent conservatives backed Mo Brooks.Truthfully he would have been my choice if i had a vote in Alabama.

Last but not least you had Roy Moore who had the backing of another group of populist conservatives that went to bat for him;notably Steve Bannon.

A lot of rank and file conservatives liked Moore. On the other hand a lot of rank and file conservatives and Republicans in Alabama didn’t like Roy Moore.I thought he was wildly popular in the state but if you talked to various people from Alabama that may not have been the case. His numbers were doing very well though against Doug Jones, once he clinched the nomination. That is,they were doing very well up until the allegations of sexual misconduct hit his campaign.

Once that happened it was all downhill. The other problem is that Moore ran a terrible campaign against Jones.

I’m sorry but there were blunders. Still, the deciding factor was most likely the accusations against him. They did this to Herman Cain too and he dropped out. It’s the politics of personal destruction and they(Democrats) use  it because it works.

Say a person is innocent, once the thought has been put out there, people begin to  have doubts. They will ask themselves, what if?It will always be in the back of their minds. We’re supposed to use due process. When there’s an election that due process is a monkey wrench. There simply isn’t enough time and the candidate spends an inordinate amount of time focused on defending themselves. It’s bad enough if they’re running a lousy campaign;worse if they have to continually defend their innocence. They can’t focus on the issues.

Bannon’s a good man. He really knocked himself out for Moore. You can’t fault Bannon or Trump. I hate to say it but i think Mo Brooks would have been a better choice.Perhaps even Luther Strange would have done better in the general. The one you CAN fault there is Mitch McConnell for getting involved and taking out Brooks in the primary. People also encouraged a write in to stop Moore;that peeled off some. What really put a dent in Moore though was low turn out. It’s very simple. If turn out is high, you win.If turn out is low,you lose. Turn out matters more than anything.I’ve seen it time and time again. You stay home it doesn’t work out well.

In the end Trump,McConnell and the RNC tried to save Roy Moore but it didn’t happen. You can count on Moore’s accusers vanishing now. The damage was done and Jones got the seat.On the bright side it’s up for grabs in 2 yrs.

Our President sent out a tweet stating that  in the future we have to put up GREAT candidates.Absolutely! It’s key.  He’s right.

Before I  take off,be sure to catch Wayne. Fantastic  show. Don’t miss! Pls, if you like it,spread the word,k?

just because Rosenstein looks and acts like a dweeb doesn’t make him an innocent bystander. He had to know what was going on at the DOJ and FBI. He keeps himself under the radar and does a good job of it. I have no doubt in my mind he knows more than he’s letting on.
